Happy New Year!

My year is winding down with a whimper. Really, that’s me whimpering. I’ve had the most atrocious cold this last week. Not even exaggerating, this has been the worst cold I’ve had in decades! Since I’ve been out of commission, I’m afraid I wasn’t able to post about our New Year’s Eve recipes. But I thought I might tell you a little bit about it.

As far back as I can remember, my parents would put together a veritable buffet of fancy finger foods. It featured many meats, cheeses, crackers, pickles and olives, plus a few other tasty nibbles. I loved it, especially the mix and match of flavor combinations.

Now people are putting together these extravagant charcuterie boards, and I’m a fan. Over the years, we have added fancier meats and cheeses to our spread, as well as much more interesting pickled vegetables. I’m especially fond of my homemade pickled asparagus.

We also have started making a focaccia serving board. I ran across the idea a while back and though, hey that’s fun! I love that I can bake my round of brie right on top of the bread. I use a focaccia recipe that calls for beer, as well as yeast. It gives whole new dimension to this easy to make bread.

As soon as I’ve recovered from this mega cold, I do plan on sharing a few NYE recipes. Better late than never or so I’ve heard.

I hope you all have a safe and happy New Year!

Welcome to my new blog, Cooking Around the Calendar.

I grew up in a food loving family, so it’s no surprise that cooking is one of my hobbies. I’ve lived all over the U.S. and never get tired of discovering new types of regional cuisine. But not just our home cooking; I love food from all over the globe.

In the coming year, I plan on sharing some of my favorite foods, as well as some of my favorite holiday dishes. Some of these recipes have been in my family for generations, others are new favorites. I’ll tell you a little bit about the history of each dish and why I think it’s special.

My other interests are travel, home décor, sewing and crafting. I might just slip in a few non-cooking blogs to keep us all on our toes.

I hope we see a lot of each other in this coming year.
